When Barrett was about a week old, we received the results from the blood work done at the hospital when he was born. It was just a paper in the mail that said we should get him in to his doctor for further testing as soon as possible. As soon as possible. Those are scary words for a new mommy. Especially one in my mental state.
His blood work showed a possible thyroid disease. My mom has thyroid issues, Isaac’s mom has thyroid issues, Isaac’s sister was born without part of her thyroid…. panic set in for me!
I contacted his doctor and he promptly called in orders for blood work at our hospital here in Guymon. My dad and I took him and they drew 4 giant vials of his blood. The nurse who did the blood draw was amazing. She drew the blood from his arm – just like you would an adult. She hit the vein the first time and got the blood. Of course Barrett screamed, he was stuck with a needle! But, he didn’t cry for long and my dad was wonderful! I honestly could not have done it without him!
The next morning Dr. Rhandawa texted me bright and early to let me know that everything came back normal. When they test at the hospital, they only submit a tiny drop of blood for each test. When the larger amount of blood was tested, it was determined that he does not in fact have a thyroid issue at this point and we will continue to monitor his blood work until he is 2. What a relief!!
This was just another thing to add to the eventfulness of Barrett’s birth and infancy and I was sure it wouldn’t be the last!
