Due to some VERY good and some not-so-good happenings this last week, I finally feel like I am pregnant! Of course, the pregnancy tests I took at home, along with those at the doctor’s offices said I was pregnant, but I’ve been (not so) patiently waiting for some real assurance there actually is a baby in my stomach! Throughout my life, if something weird could happen in a situation, it was likely to happen to me! I couldn’t help but wonder if something else was making this test positive – crazy I know.
I have had a little bit of a difficult time deciding what OB doctor to use. There are two doctors in Guymon, one of which I was considering using. After some investigation, however, I learned he would be moving away after his daughter graduates in May. Of course, I didn’t want to start with a doctor and then move to another mid-way through my pregnancy, so I decided to use Dr. Knudsen in Liberal, which was always a consideration, I just didn’t want to have to drive to Liberal if there was another good option.  Dr. Knudsen is wonderful. I cannot imagine a better doctor for my personality! I need reassurance, and lots of explanations – and he and his nurses offer both of these things without me even asking! I saw him Thursday (December 19) for the first time. They did blood work, urine analysis, and an exam, but felt it was too early for the first ultrasound because I was only 6 weeks and 4 or 5 days, and he wanted me to be at least 7 weeks.
I felt a little nauseous and tired in the evenings after I’d get home from work and had eaten dinner this week – but nothing major!
Then, Monday morning (December 23), I woke up and knew instantly something wasn’t good – I wasn’t going to make it far without losing what I had eaten the night before. I’ll spare you the details, but it was a rough morning! I made it to work just on time, but the sickness continued throughout the busy day – no fun! I had, however, read that morning sickness was a sign that things were going well.  I didn’t feel good Tuesday, but I didn’t throw up – yay! The rest of the week was better; still some bouts of nausea, but they were bearable.
Thursday, I went back to the doctor in Liberal for the first sonogram. The baby was being super stubborn and the doctor had a hard time finding it. Then, he and the nurse both said “There it is!”at the same time. Yay! There really is a baby in there! He still had trouble getting a good angle to look at the baby and measure it to get an approximate due date, but it was there! Then, he pushed a button and here came the tears… I was hearing my baby’s heartbeat! Oh my… not only was there a baby in my stomach, but it also had a heartbeat, and I could hear it! Amazing.

From the sonogram, he gave me an August 8th due date. Now it is becoming even more real that we are actually having a baby! I cannot wait! 🙂
